People get to judge you by results and the quality of your work. In certain cases, the hardworking and loyal employee tends to be overlooked by organisation relating to their yearly promotions and increment. The opportunities so often swiftly taken from them and offered to those whose doing a good public relation and easy on the easy or simple word a "people pleaser".
The so called "people pleaser" must have taken your one a million shot for life chance promotion. So here I am going to share you some tips that might be added into your advantage and get yourself notified and to be appreciated in the way of you please :
1. Always to have pride in what you do. Inferiority on your current role and profession is never a good sign. Phrase like "I am sorry I'm just a normal secretary, so I assumed it must not put into urgency or how am i supposed to know that the task is urgent". As a secretary you must keep abreast to surroundings and the things directed to you. Not having pride in what you do will encourage others not to convey the same respect to you.
2. Use your common sense to develop and widen your job responsibilities. You will be facing with sudden growth and needs of improvements. To identify the problem and situation and initiate ways to solve the problem. More importantly, dont whinge about your problem to anyone, it might break your spirit instead find out the solution to your problem.
3. Keep abreast and expose yourself more to business knowledge for your own awareness. Find out what is your firm or departmental business plan says. Read a newspaper regularly to find out more or how your firm's major client are doing. You never know how your little bit of information can be used to your advantage in the future. Turn it to your advantage when you contribute to your firm's aim with a clear understanding of what is going on.
4. Put on your armour! Wear clothes that are appropriate and which make you feel fit to take on the world. If you think you look good, you will feel good, and people will notice you. Remember to dress for the job you want, not necessarily the job you've got.
5. Meet and greet your clients. Maybe not all of them on every occasion! By putting faces to names (and having your clients know who you are) will improve client relationships and so impact positively on your relationship with your manager.
6. Go to social events, seminars and the occasional meeting. Get to know your internal and external clients. More importantly, get yourself seen! It is no good hiding yourself away and then complaining when you get left out of things.
7. Self-promote tactfully. Be a team player; share your best practices with colleagues; share your knowledge and skills; contribute to others' development (eg new starters, other secretaries, trainees). The results will be amazing.
8. Cultivate superior skills and qualities through advanced training and learning. It is always superior performance that pays off, not good intentions.
9. Make sure people know who you are - Introduce yourself to people; smile and say "good morning" (no matter how moody you feel!); start a conversation in the lift instead of silently staring at the floor-level indicator.
10. If you are not in control of your own profile and visibility, then someone else is controlling it for you.
